A dramatic broach with a large 3 dimensional stag carved from bone on one side of the swivel center, behind the stag is a piece of antique fabric printed in green and brown.  The back is missing its glass.   The center is surrounded by a bold chain motiv.  --- the subject matter and the sise make this most possibly a broach or pin worn by a gentleman.

Further research on this piece led to a painting showing a young lady wearing just such a piece.  These ivory pieces were carved in Germany and usually were not set in gold, but made such that they could be worn without a bezel.  The settings were usually done in the home land of the buyer, there were, for instance, jewelers in London who specialized in importing these pieces.

The painting shows Emily Holman Hunt (1836-1921), painted by William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) in 1861-66; the painting is in private hands, but a print appears in "Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria"by Charlotte Gere and Judy Rudoe for British Museum Press, 2010.

The broach dates to the mid 19th century.
